Germinate your autoflower seed step by step

This spring we give you an autoflowering seed of CBD MARULA (Fruity Bliss) with your order of CBD flowers. Because we believe that there is no better way to connect with the plant than seeing it grow from scratch, on your balcony, your terrace or your garden. If you want to know the full story behind the collection, don’t miss our spring 2026 greeting.

Here we explain the simplest and most effective method: germinate your autoflowering seed and sow it directly in its final pot, without transplanting. By avoiding transplanting, the root grows without interruption and the plant makes the most of its short life cycle. It's fast, safe and works whether it's your first time or you already have experience.

Follow this step-by-step guide and in a few weeks you will have your own CBD hemp plant growing strong.

Why directly into the final pot?

The autoflowering ones go fast: their complete cycle lasts between 8 and 12 weeks, from seed to harvest. They flower on their own thanks to their ruderalis genetics, without depending on the hours of light. If you want to understand better the differences between varieties, have a look at our article on sativa and indica.

Such a short cycle has an important consequence: any stress in the first weeks is noticeable in the final result. The transplant, even if it seems harmless, slows down the growth for a few days. And in an autoflowering, those days are not recovered.

That's why we recommend planting directly into the final pot. No transplanting, no stress: the root grows free from the first moment and the plant develops stronger.

If you prefer to use a Jiffy as a germinator before transplanting, keep in mind that autos have less root strength and may not break through the Jiffy mesh, which can sometimes affect growth. Both methods work, but planting directly into the final pot is the simpler and more effective option.

Step 1 - Soak the seed

It all starts with a glass of water. Soak your seed in water at room temperature and let it soak for up to 48 hours. The idea is that the root (radicle) emerges and measures about 2-3 mm.

  • Add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide (3% hydrogen peroxide) to oxygenate the water and prevent the appearance of fungus.
  • Preferably use osmosis or rain water to avoid chlorine and other contaminants that can hinder germination.
  • If after 24 hours the seed is still floating, tap it gently with your finger to make it sink.
  • Keep the glass in a dark and warm place (between 20 and 25 °C).

As soon as you see the small white root peeking out, the seed is ready to be planted. Do not wait until the root is very long, as it is fragile and can be damaged when handled.

Step 2 - Prepare the final planter

As we have already seen, autoflowering plants are not transplanted. So choose a pot of the right size from the start: it will be their definitive home.

What size pot to use for autoflowering plants?

  • Standard outdoor: pots from 11 to 18 liters.
  • Interior: 11 to 19 liters (equivalent to 3-5 gallons).
  • Compact or fast autoflowering: pots of 7 to 10 liters.
  • Autoflowering XL / XXL: up to 18-20 liters to maximize their potential.

Fill the pot with a light, aerated and well-drained substrate, ideally a specific mix for autoflowering or a "light" substrate (low in nutrients at the beginning). A good substrate usually combines coconut fiber, perlite and vermiculite to facilitate oxygenation of the roots.

Slightly moisten the substrate before sowing, without soaking it. The humidity should be uniform so that the seed finds the ideal conditions as soon as it comes into contact with the medium.

Step 3 - Sow your seed

With the seed germinated and the pot ready, the key moment arrives:

  1. Make a small hole 1-1.5 cm deep in the center of the substrate .
  2. Insert the seed with the radicle (root) pointing downward.
  3. Cover it gently with substrate loosely, so that the root can advance without resistance.
  4. Spray the surface with water to settle the soil around the seed.

It is important not to bury the seed too deep: if it remains below 2 cm, it may be difficult for it to come to the surface and it may be exhausted in the attempt. A depth of 1-1.5 cm is sufficient to protect it and to anchor the root properly.

Step 4 - The first days of your plant

You have already sown. Now it's time to have a little patience: the first days are the most delicate.

Keep the substrate with good humidity (without puddling) in a warm environment, between 20 °C and 25 °C, and with indirect or soft light until the cotyledons and the first true leaves appear.

  • Moderate watering: water little and often around the sprout, not directly over it. Avoid saturating the substrate, as excess water can rot the seed or cause fungus.
  • Protection from the elements: protect the seedling from strong direct sun, wind and heavy rain during the first week.
  • Nighttime temperature control: if the temperature drops at night, you can cover the pot with a makeshift mini greenhouse or a cut plastic bottle to maintain heat and humidity.

As soon as the plant has its first true leaves well formed, it is ready to receive full sun and to grow strongly. From this point on, the cycle progresses rapidly: in a few weeks the automatic flowering will begin.

Know your seed: MARULA (Fruity Bliss)

This season, the gift seed with every Cannactiva order is MARULA (Fruity Bliss), a CBD autoflowering variety with a fruity and enveloping aromatic profile. Like all the hemp seeds we offer, MARULA contains less than 0.2% THC and a high CBD content.

MARULA stands out for its fruity character, reminiscent of ripe tropical fruits. This aromatic profile is due to its specific combination of terpenes, the natural compounds that give each cannabis strain its unique aroma and character.

The seed is provided for collecting and genetic preservation purposes. If you live in a territory where the cultivation of low THC hemp is allowed, this guide will serve as a reference for the germination process and direct sowing in the final pot.
